Two Ziyarat-namas for visiting Imam Hasan (a) are narrated in the book Kamil al-Ziyarat, one of the ancient sources of supplication and Ziyarat. One of these Ziyarat-namas is from the words of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah and the other from Imam Baqir (a) or Imam Sadiq (a). The Ziyarat of Imam Hasan can be performed on all days, and according to Allamah Majlisi, it is better to visit the Imam on the days of his birth, caliphate, martyrdom, the Day of Mubahalah, and the 25th of Dhu al-Hijjah.

Imam Hasan Mujtaba (a)

Imam Hasan Mujtaba (a) (3-50 AH), son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (a) and Fatima Zahra (s),[1] is the second Imam of the Shi'ites[2] and the fifth Caliph of Muslims. He is considered the most similar person to the Messenger of God (s)[3] and a devout and ascetic individual.[4] He gave away all or half of his wealth several times as charity.[5] He performed Hajj on foot many times.[6] After his martyrdom, his body was buried in the Baqi' cemetery next to Fatima bint Asad.[7] This is the place where later Imam Zayn al-Abidin (a), Imam Baqir (a), and Imam Sadiq (a) were also buried.[8]

It is narrated that Imam Husayn (a) used to visit the tomb of Imam Hasan (a) every Friday.[9] Imam Sadiq (a) in a narration stated that angels visit the tombs of the Imams (a), including the tomb of Imam Hasan (a).[10] Narrations from the Prophet (s) and the Imams (a) recommending the Ziyarat of Imam Hasan (a) are found in sources; for example, the Prophet (s) in narrations considered the Ziyarat of Imam Hasan (a) a means of salvation on the Day of Judgment and reaching Paradise.[11]

  • The day of the Imam's caliphate, coinciding with the day of Imam Ali's (a) martyrdom

Sources of Ziyarat-nama

Two Ziyarat-namas for visiting Imam Hasan (a) are narrated in the book Kamil al-Ziyarat, one of the ancient sources of supplication and Ziyarat. One of these Ziyarat-namas is from the words of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah and the other from Imam Baqir (a) or Imam Sadiq (a).[15]

Also, according to Shia scholars, the best Ziyarat for visiting the Shia Imams are Ziyarat Jami'a Kabira and Ziyarat Aminullah.[16] Allamah Majlisi, based on a narration from Imam Sadiq (a), believes that the Imam can be visited with any wording.[17]

Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah and the Ziyarat of Imam Hasan

It is narrated that Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah recited the following phrases when visiting the tomb of Imam Hasan (a)[18] which include greetings to Imam Hasan Mujtaba (a) with titles such as "son of the Commander of the Faithful", "remainder of the believers", and "fifth of the Ahl al-Kisa", emphasizing his lineage, his upbringing in the lap of Islam, and Imam Hasan's faith. At the end, expressing sorrow for his separation, he also sends greetings to his brother Imam Husayn (a).
