ʿArafāt is a desert at south-east of Mecca, 21 kilometers from Mecca-Ta'if road. It is said that Adam (a) and Hawwa (a) met there for the first time. In the north of this desert, stands Jabal al-Rahma or Jabala al-'Arafat. In recent years, many trees have been planted there as pilgrims has to stay in this desert from the noon of Dhu l-Hijja 9 until sunset as a part of hajj. (see: Wuquf at 'Arafat)
