Uthman Mosque (Medina)

Template:جعبه اطلاعات بناUthman b. 'Affan Mosque is one of the mosques in Medina, Saudi Arabia, built in the early 15th Lunar Hijri century. This mosque is located 425 meters south of Masjid al-Nabawi and is situated within the area of Muṣallā al-Nabī (s).

Location

This mosque is located in Medina, 425 meters south of Masjid al-Nabawi, and 322 meters from Masjid al-Ghamāmah, within the area of Muṣallā al-Nabī (s).[1]

Name

Some researchers have suggested that the name 'Uthman for this mosque is because, within the area of the Muṣallā mosques, there was a mosque named after each of the early caliphs, and this mosque was named to complete the names of the four caliphs.[2] This mosque is also known today in Medina as the Dhū al-Nūrayn Mosque.

History of the Current Building

The current building of this mosque was constructed around 1410 Lunar Hijri by Shaykh Khashoggi and handed over to the Saudi Endowment Department. Therefore, its presence within the area of Muṣallā al-Nabī (s) and near the Prophet's Shrine should not lead to the assumption that the said mosque is one of the ancient mosques dating back to the Prophetic era.[3]

The mosque had a minaret until 2012, which the Department of Islamic Affairs demolished due to extensive water leakage from beneath it and the minaret's tilt.[4] Since then, the mosque has been in its current state with one dome and no minaret.

History of the Earlier Building

Before the current Uthman Mosque (which is south of Masjid al-Nabawi), there was an older mosque with the same name, located in the northwestern area of Masjid al-Nabawi and inside the Sultaniyya Fortress.[5] The old Uthman Mosque can be considered completely separate from the current mosque, whose history exists but whose building is lost.

The exact date of the establishment of the old Uthman Mosque is unknown, but 'Ali b. Musa mentioned the existence of a mosque named 'Uthman b. 'Affan in the Sultaniyya Fortress in Medina in 1303 Lunar Hijri / 1885 CE, describing it as a mosque with one minaret;[6] a fortress that Sultan Sulayman al-'Uthmānī (reigned 926-974) had built in the tenth century. It is said that the soldiers inside the fortress prayed in this mosque.[7] Some researchers have considered this mosque to have been built at the site of the Prophet's Muṣallā in the first year of Hijra; a place that was originally the house of Ḥakīm b. al-'Adāʾ and was called Dār Abī Yasār.[8][9]

The mosque building was ruined in 1338 Lunar Hijri and was destroyed in 1370 Lunar Hijri during the development projects of this area along with the fortress.[10] Shaykh Khashoggi built the new building, with a change in location, in the first decade of the fifteenth Lunar Hijri century at its current site.[11]

Some researchers believe that the Uthman Mosque was built on the site of the Tajūrī Mosque. The Tajūrī Mosque was built around 1000 Lunar Hijri by Shaykh Ḥasan Tajūrī, one of the teachers of the Prophet's Mosque.[12]
