Uthman b. 'Affan Mosque is one of the mosques in Medina, Saudi Arabia, built in the early 15th Lunar Hijri century. This mosque is located 425 meters south of Masjid al-Nabi and is situated within the area of Musalla of the Prophet (s).

Location

This mosque is located in Medina, 425 meters south of Masjid al-Nabi, and 322 meters from Masjid al-Ghamamah, within the area of Musalla of the Prophet (s).[1]

Name

Some researchers have suggested that the mosque was named after Uthman ibn Affan because mosques bearing the names of the four early caliphs were established in the area of the Musalla. According to this interpretation, the name was intended to complete the group of mosques associated with the four caliphs. This explanation is a scholarly hypothesis rather than an established fact.[2] The mosque is also known in Medina as the Mosque of Dhu al-Nurayn, an epithet traditionally associated with Uthman b. Affan.

History of the present Building

The current building of this mosque was constructed around 1410 AH/ 1989-90 by Shaykh Khashoggi and handed over to the Saudi Endowment Department. Therefore, its presence within the area of Musalla al-Nabi (s) and near the Masjid al-Nabi should not lead to the assumption that the said mosque is one of the ancient mosques dating back to the Prophetic era.[3] The mosque had a minaret until 2012, which the Department of Islamic Affairs demolished due to extensive water leakage from beneath it and the minaret's tilt.[4] Since then, the mosque has been in its current state with one dome and no minaret.

The Older Uthman Mosque

Before the present Uthman Mosque (which is south of Masjid al-Nabi), there was an older mosque with the same name, located in the northwestern area of Masjid al-Nabi and inside the Sultaniyya Fortress.[5] The old Uthman Mosque can be considered completely separate from the present mosque, whose history exists but whose building is lost.

The exact date of the establishment of the old Uthman Mosque is unknown, but 'Ali b. Musa mentioned the existence of a mosque named 'Uthman b. 'Affan in the Sultaniyya Fortress in Medina in 1303 AH/ 1885 CE, describing it as a mosque with one minaret;[6] a fortress that Sultan Sulayman al-'Uthmani (R. 926-974) had built in the 10th century. It is said that the soldiers inside the fortress prayed in this mosque.[7] Some researchers have considered this mosque to have been built at the site of the Prophet's Musalla in the 1th AH; a place that was originally the house of Hakim b. al-'Adaʾ and was called Dar Abi Yasar.[8][9]

The mosque building was ruined in 1338 AH and was destroyed in 1370 AH during the development projects of this area along with the fortress.[10] Shaykh Khashoggi built the new building, with a change in location, in the first decade of the fifteenth Lunar Hijri century at its current site.[11]

Some researchers believe that the Uthman Mosque was built on the site of the Tajūrī Mosque. The Tajūrī Mosque was built around 1000 AH/ 1591 by Shaykh Hasan Tajuri, one of the teachers of the Prophet's Mosque.[12]
